It’s time for lighter-weight everything, including shoes. Espadrilles are inexpensive, chic, and very comfortable – the perfect summer casual shoe. They are also back in fashion with a bang. They’re being worn on all the runways in the spring/summer shows.

The espadrille is a shoe with a canvas upper and usually a rope sole. It originated in the Pyrenees in France in the 1200s and were worn for centuries by soldiers..

We wrote about Tom’s Shoes a couple of years ago, and we still are huge fans. Tom’s have great style, and for every pair sold a pair is given to a child in a third world country with no shoes. That’s hard to beat!

That being said, after you order your pair of Tom’s we have some alternatives to fill out your espadrille wardrobe.

The espadrilles at are made in Spain, where the company is based. They offer an enormous selection. They carry espadrilles for men, women and children. They also have a large selection of bags.

For women, they have the regular flat espadrille in solid colors, checks, and patterns. They have espadrille wedges, heels, strappy, peep-toe, rubber-soled just to name a few. Prices range from $26.00 – $200.00.

J.Crew has several wedge variations. Prices range from $88.00 to $175.00.

Soludos sells the classic espadrilles for men and women. I am partial to the classics so I love this site. The men’s selection has nine colors and patterns. Women have eighteen colors and patterns. Prices range from $28.00 – $75.00.

Havaianas, best known for their flip-flops, have a selection of twenty-one espadrilles, including sneakers.

My favorite espadrilles rarely last through one season of hard wear, but to keep them at their best –

• Do not let them get wet
• Do not substitute them for workout shoes
