Customize your iPhone.
Reader Sandra W. requested an article on tips for the iPhone. I learned many new tricks researching this and hope you do as well.
Writing an email from your phone? You can use bold, italics and underlining just as if you were writing from your laptop. Highlight the text you want to change by clicking on the blinking cursor and get menu of Select/ Select All /Quote Level and an arrow. Hit Select. Once the text you want is highlighted, you will have a new menu which includes BIU. Select that, then select which of the three you’d like.
To go back a page, iPhones do not have a ‘back’ button like the Androids. To go back to a previous page simply swipe from left to right from the left edge of the screen to the right edge to get to the previous page.
Customize vibration patterns for incoming calls. To recognize that an incoming call is from one of your important contacts when your phone is on vibrate, customize the vibration pattern to identify exactly who is calling. Go to Contacts and select one. Tap Edit in the upper right corner. Scroll down and get to Vibration>Create New Vibration. Tap and hold to create a pattern, using long presses for long vibrations, etc. For an iPhone X click on Ringtone and on new page see Vibration and go from there.
Search for a specific text message. I only just recently stumbled upon this option! There is a search bar at the very top of the Message interface. Sometimes you have to pull the front page down a bit to reveal the search bar.
You can still send text messages to iPhone-using friends when you are using in-flight WiFi, or overseas with a no data plan. Go to Settings>Messages and disable Send as SMS and enable iMessage.
Uncover hidden characters under some of the iOS keyboard characters. Long press the number 0 to reveal the degree symbol. When you see the degree symbol, scroll left to highlight it. Long press the dash symbol to reveal other size dashes.
Charge your phone faster by putting it into Airplane Mode. That turns off all the sending and receiving of data and lets the phone charge faster.
Use Siri to open apps or make a call using speakerphone. Siri is found by holding down the Home button. If you have an iPhone X with no home button there are two easy ways to summon Siri. Say “Hey Siri” to your phone and she will appear. Alternatively, hold down the big right side button for two or three seconds. To exit Siri swipe up from the bottom of the display page or quickly press the large side button to take you back to the home screen.
Sometimes you want to make a STATEMENT. Double tap Shift to use all caps.
Customize the ‘signature’ at the end of your iPhone emails. Go to Settings, scroll down to Mail. Find and open Signature and go from there.
Tap the Shift bar twice to add a period to your text. It saves having to switch screens to get to the .
Customize your control center. To add or subtract items in your control center, go to Settings>Control Center>Customize. The controls you already have are listed at the top with the ability to remove them. Additional controls you can add are listed below that with a green + sign to add.
I just found my control center on my iPhone X! On the X it is in a different place. Swipe down from the cellular signal icon, right along the side and there it is!
