Timely nuggets of information and ideas we want to share with you.

Levain cookies are delicious!  They have several bakeries in NYC, but my daughter discovered their cookies in the freezer aisle at Whole Foods.  The cookies are partially baked, then frozen.  Consumers pop them in the oven for 10 minutes and out comes a fresh-baked cookie that is divine!  They sell five flavors – Two Chip Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Walnut, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip, Dark Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Raisin.  Each box has eight 2 oz cookies.

They have bakeries in New York City and Washington, D.C.  They will also ship fresh baked cookies to you, gift wrapped.  I am very happy with the cookies in the freezer aisle of my supermarket. One box is about $10.00.

Maine Coast Sea Vegetables is celebrating it’s 50th season.  Their mission is to provide high quality North Atlantic sea vegetables.  The company was founded by a couple in Maine and the inspiration was a pot of miso soup.  Most of their sea vegetables are harvested from the cold waters of the North Atlantic.  They choose where to harvest in compliance with Organic Certification to ensure the highest standards. Their sea vegetables are a whole food from the ocean.  They sell eight types of sea vegetables – Alaria, Bladderwrack, Dulse, Irish Moss, Rockweed, Kelp, Laver and Sea Lettuce. They have a blog and provide recipes. The forms you can buy in are whole leaf, coarse/flakes, granules, or powder.

Sea vegetables are good sources of dietary fiber, minerals, and iodine, and they fall under the same nutritional labeling rules as other foods.  I add seaweed flakes to soups and salads and many other dishes because I love the flavor.

Both of these apps provide calming background noise to boost your productivity and help you work better.  This has been especially important during the pandemic with so many people working from home.

Coffitivity recreates the ambient sounds of a coffee shop for those who find that low murmuring crowd noise conducive to working.  You can select from six various café-type sounds – Morning Murmur, Lunchtime Lounge, University Undertones, Paris Paradise, Brazil Bistro and Texas Teahouse.  I listened to each, and they are as advertised.  It’s an entertaining app and free.

Noisli offers many background sounds that users can mix and match and blend together, the goal being to block out annoying real-life noises that might distract you.  You can choose bird songs, a slow-moving train, wind, a crackling fire and much more. It is a free app.

These other uses for dryer sheets will surprise you:

  • A dryer sheet will repel insects, especially Bounce. Bounce contains linaloot and betacitronellol.  Tie a sheet on your belt loop if you are going into a mosquito or gnat area.
  • If your rubber soled shoes squeak and make noise when you walk rub a dryer sheet on the soles. The residue from the fabric softener will minimize the sound.
  • Dampen a used dryer sheet and use it to shine any chrome you have in your kitchen or bathroom.
  • If your sneakers are beginning to smell, cut a dryer sheet in half, and put a half in each shoe.
  • Wet a fresh dryer sheet and use it to clean the scum off your shower door and any rings in your toilet bowl.
