A futuristic sculpture called ‘The Portal’ has been erected in both Dublin and New York City that allows people more than 3,000 miles apart see and interact with each other in real time. The one in New York City is located in front of the Flatiron Building on Fifth Avenue.  The Portal in Dublin is on O’Connell Street in front of the GPO and the Spire.  The Portals were activated on May 8th and will be operated through this fall. Since the activation, New Yorkers and Dubliners have been conversing, waving, and having fun together.The Portal was first made public in 2021 by the Benediktas Gylys Foundation, a non-profit that works to unify nations.  Similar portals have also been set up in Lithuania and Poland. Benediktas Gylys, a Lithuanian artist and founder of The Portal said, “The Portals are an invitation to meet people across borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is – united and one.”
