Kare-Kare sauce is Filipino in origin. It is made of peanut butter, annatto seed and a fermented shrimp paste called bagoong. There are powdered and jarred versions available now. The best is Fila Manila Kare-Kare which is on Amazon, 12 oz. for $10.99.
Fila Manila Kare-Kare contains date nectar and coconut vinegar. Other versions contain toasted rice. It is a thick savory sauce that is found in stews or melted into butter as a sauce. Kare-Kare is a specific rich stew, a kind of Southeast Asian curry made with the sauce and braised beef. It is not an overwhelming taste but has a delicious umami flavor.
Bon Appetit has these other uses for Kare-Kare sauce – spread it on grilled cheese, stir it into bucatini pasta or add a couple of tablespoons to rice or grits.

Two very resilient house plants:
ASE reader Frannie B. loves her ZZ plant. I had never heard of a ZZ plant before she recommended it. I now have a happy, healthy ZZ plant that is growing larger by the minute. It doesn’t get upset if it’s not watered on a strict schedule or if it’s in low light. I have mine in a bright spot and I’m rewarded by continual new shoots, but if you only have low light, it will do just fine.
Snake plant (also known as mother-in-law’s tongue) is happy in low or bright light. It only needs to be watered every couple of weeks in spring and summer and every four weeks in winter. It is a succulent with thick leaves. It produces new leaves year-round. It can grow from 6” to 8 feet.
Note: This plant is toxic to cats and dogs.
