A new video dropped this week at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) by Perrin R. Ireland. The topic is the illegal wildlife trade that is causing some animal species to become extinct as they are slaughtered for some part of their bodies that will bring money. It’s only 4 minutes and has delightful and creative graphics.
Summer is time to avoid the stove. I love keeping frozen single portion meals – from soup to Bolognese. Make a big batch of your favorite and avoid the stove for nights. This Silicone Souper Freezing Tray makes four, 1-cup servings. $19.95. Two trays for $36.99.
Do you know anyone who might be a good candidate for Senior Planet Exploration Center in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan? It’s a tech-savvy nonprofit retirement center, perhaps the tech-savviest community anywhere in the world. The executive director is Tom Kamber and he has a bee in his bonnet about ageism. He feels that the world is determined to keep seniors sidelined. He created Senior Planet, a tech-themed community center that prepares and guides seniors through the latest in the tech world. Tom Kamber calls this “uncorking their lives”. Only 54% of Americans over the age of 65 have access to the internet. Senior Planet was launched in New York City in 2013 by Older Adults Technology Services (OATS). There are now 40 computer labs across NYC’s five boroughs. There are also centers in rural upstate New York, Maryland, Texas, California and Colorado. The centers often have names other than Senior Planet. They are all under the nonprofit umbrella of OATS.
Amazon has the Amazon Smile program which donates 0.5% of the price of eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. It works only if Amazon shoppers begin their shopping at www.smile.amazon.com but I have found that if I am on the regular site by mistake, a little box will drop down to remind me to switch to Amazon Smile and create a donation to the nonprofit I’ve chosen.
