Portable, Refreshing, Alcoholic Seltzers – Suddenly Everywhere.

It is fun to serve guests a new drink!

ASE subscriber Frannie B. just dropped off a new, light, bubbly, delicious, slightly alcoholic drink for me to try – Spiked Seltzer. It is like the popular LaCroix – with a kick and an attitude. These drinks come in individual cans and bottles with a range of citrussy, fruity flavors. Their alcohol content is similar to beer (4.2 to 6%), but they are low on calories and carbs. Some are gluten free. You might drink them like a white wine spritzer, but these spiked seltzers are full of flavor. Less sweet than a soda, they are aimed at an adult palette. There are several variations for you to try.

Spiked Seltzer is full of crisp, fresh flavor while being low on carbs, gluten-free and using only natural ingredients. It has 6% alcohol which is just slightly higher than beer. It comes in four flavors – Cape Cod Cranberry, Valencia Orange, West Indies Lime, and Indian River Grapefruit. It has the highest sugar and alcohol content of the leading brands. It is delicious all by itself, but Spiked Seltzer offers interesting drink recipes to liven up the cocktail hour or a croquet game. Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer describes itself as a ‘premium malt beverage’. It comes in three flavors – cranberry lime, watermelon and orange mango. This is a light drink with just 90 calories in 12 oz., 1 gram of carbs, zero sugar, no artificial sweeteners and is gluten free. It contains 4.5% alcohol, a little less than beer. White Claw Hard Seltzer claims to be the purest of the spiked seltzer options. It has 110 calories, is gluten free, is low in carbs and has 5% alcohol. It contains no artificial flavors, and has no colors or preservatives. They are proud of the purity of their alcohol which is made by the fermentation of sugar in a special yeast. It does contain a small amount of cane sugar. It comes in four flavors: Ruby Grapefruit, Black Cherry, Raspberry and Natural Lime. White Claw Hard Seltzer.

Nauti Hard Seltzer has 110 calories, 5 grams of carbs and 5% alcohol.   It comes in five flavors: cranberry, lemon lime, raspberry, grapefruit and blueberry lemonade. It is all natural. Some reviewers thought that it had an artificial taste, and most preferred the lemon lime flavor. Nauti Seltzer.

Truly Spiked and Sparkling has 5% alcohol, 100 calories, 1 gram of sugar, 2 carbs and it is gluten free. It has a slightly tart flavor and comes in Colima Lime, Grapefruit & Pomelo, Sicilian Blood Orange and Lemon Yuzu. It is made by the Boston Beer Company that makes Sam Adams and Angry Orchard. Henry’s Hard Sparkling, Spiked Sparkling Water comes in lemon lime and passion fruit flavors. It is a light choice with 93 calories, 2.9 grams of carbs and 4.2% alcohol. Reviewers say that it has a strong taste of alcohol and might be best as a mixer. Henry’s Hard Sparkling.
