Hold a snowflake in the palm of your hand – then make ice-cream!
For those of us in cold, snowy, wintery climes, subscriber Nell O. reminded me that it is time to make snow ice-cream. For the rest of you who are in some warm place for the winter, enjoy your key lime pie – or you can buy a snow cone machine and make your own dessert.
The first requirement for snow ice-cream is fresh, clean snow. Here are some variations which you can try to find your favorite recipe.
Basic Three Ingredient Snow Ice-cream
Ingredients
- 8 cups of snow (with a few extra cups as needed, because snow texture will affect the amount required)
- 1 (14 oz.) can, sweetened, condensed milk – ideally chilled in a snowbank or your fridge if you plan ahead
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Stir together snow, condensed milk and vanilla until combined. Add more snow to get the desired consistency. Snow ice-cream will keep in your freezer for a week.
Variations on the basic snow ice-cream:
- Replace 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk with 1 cup of milk and 1/3 cup of sugar
- Replace sweetened condensed milk with 1 (12oz) can of evaporated milk and 1 cup of granulated sugar.
- For dairy free snow ice-cream, use 1 cup of coconut, oat, rice or almond milk and 1/3 cup of sugar.
- Replace the sugar with honey or maple syrup to taste.
Add-ins and add-ons
- Add a few tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder or a few drops of peppermint extract into the ice-cream
- Add dried cherries on other dried fruit
- Add chocolate chips
- Top with colorful sprinkles
