beauty strategies for winter

*Updated 2019

Winter wreaks havoc on our skin and hair.  There are plenty of excellent products to help with these challenges – right on your drug store shelves.  Why spend a fortune on fancy products when you don’t have to?  We have researched most of them and tried the most promising.

Strategies for skin:

  • Put on an extra layer of moisturizer before going out into cold weather
  • Avoid hot showers which will dry out skin.  Don’t soak forever in a tub.
  • Put your moisturizer on right after you shower while skin is damp  – and your  body  will absorb it
  • Remember that UVA rays still reach our skin in winter, so use products with sun screen when outside
  • And our all-time favorite strategy – eat more fatty acids in winter!

Strategies for hair:

  • Hair dryers are not your friends in the winter.  If you must use a hair dryer, use an intensive conditioner.  If your ends are dry, use a ‘leave-in’ spray conditioner just on the ends. Ionic hair dryers claim to dry hair differently without hurting your hair.  I use one, and while I cannot explain why this is the case, it dries my hair faster with less heat and horsepower.
  • If you wash your hair daily, use a moisturizing shampoo.
  • Keep hydrated.  If you drink enough water, it helps keep your skin and hair hydrated.
  • If you are loyal to one brand of shampoo and conditioner, consider switching to its dry hair formula for the winter.
