A Garden On Your Table

ASE subscriber Nancy C. and her husband had a dinner party in their greenhouse. The peonies were spectacular and the plates looked like giant lettuce leaves. They set the perfect tone for a fresh, chic, unexpected meal. Name dropper alert: I first learned about lettuce ware from Tory Burch – who has long collected and admired Dodie Thayer’s lettuce ware creations – and now collaborates with Dodie to offer us all lettuce ware at a reasonable price.

Lettuce ware describes dishes that resemble lettuce and cabbage leaves – veins and all. It is elegant, kitschy and appealing all at the same time. The valuable vintage pieces are beautiful on display and the newer versions are dishwasher safe, which means I will use them at the table. Lettuce ware has long been favored in Europe and since the 1960’s it has been made famous by Dodie Thayer in Palm Beach. The chic hostesses of the day – Brooke Astor, Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis, Dina Merrill, C. Z. Guest and Bunny Mellon all collected them.

Being a Seattle, WA gal, I did not spend the 1960’s in Palm Beach, so pink and green preferences eluded me. Lettuce ware I can understand however. It is whimsical, chic, unique and appealing.

With her collaboration with Dodie Thayer, Tory Burch has enabled us to put lettuce ware on our tables at a reasonably affordable price. Here is their new collection:
