Bissell Pet Foundation

My friend Cathy Bissell, lifelong pet advocate, is making the lives of our four-footed friends better all over the U.S. through The Bissell Pet Foundation. The foundation was established to assist shelters and animal rescues across the U.S. in their efforts to find homes for pets.  The Foundation is a culmination of Cathy’s years of dedication to animals.  She also developed BISSELL’s Partners for Pets program which allows consumers to designate donations generated by the sale of BISSELL pet products to one of 200+ partnering shelters and rescues.  Additionally, Cathy and her sister established  as a free online resource to help reunite lost and found animals with their families, keeping them out of shelters.

Volunteering at Animal Shelters

Animal welfare organizations struggle to cope with all the unwanted, displaced and homeless animals whose lives they hope to save. Their resources are limited.

The BISSELL Pet Foundation gives grants to organizations throughout the U.S. that:

  • Place pets through adoption
  • Spay/neuter animals
  • Microchip pets so that they can always be found
  • Support foster care programs  that keep pets out of shelters and in a home environment until they can be placed in permanent homes

In addition, they consider funding for emergency relief efforts including hoarding and puppy mill rescue efforts.

Cathy and her sister have also created a website to help reunite lost pets with their families.  We applaud all of her efforts!

Lost your pet?  Lost Pet U.S.A. can help!  They offer a free, searchable, online database of lost and found pets and also provide contact information for local veterinarians and shelters all across the U.S.  You can post a lost animal to their ‘lost’ pet list and while you are there, search the list of ‘found’ pets by zip code to see if your wanderer has been found.  They also provide a template so that you can create a flyer and post it in your neighborhood – the old fashioned way.  They offer a page of ‘tips’ on finding your lost pet at:  We thought the idea of giving your local mail delivery person flyers to distribute was a particularly good suggestion.

Found a stray pet?  You can search the ‘Lost Dog’ or ‘Lost Cat’ listing on the website.  If you have found a pet which is not listed as missing, you can register in the ‘Found’ listing.  Lost Pet USA also gives you a page of excellent suggestions to help you get the pet back to his or her family.

The following is a shout-out to a person who rescued kittens,“Newborn kittens rescued from Hurricane Sandy in Brooklyn, NY. A big thanks to this feline hero! Spread the word that is a free resource to help reunite lost pets with their owners on the East Coast as they recover from Sandy. ~Veronica”

If your pet is lost, you are probably out looking for it.  Download this iPhone app to check pet resources while you search.

PARTNERS FOR PETSIf you have a favorite animal welfare organization, BISSELL offers another way to support them.  Your favorite animal organization joins ‘Partners’ and gives the link to Bissell’s website to their supporters. Any Bissell pet product bought by a supporter, will earn money for the animal welfare group.
