The nights are getting chillier. Our thoughts have turned to replacing the summer blankets with heavier, winter weight blankets. We have discovered a wonderful source of hand-woven, all natural, hand-dyed blankets, throws and shawls.
Swans Island Blankets is a Maine-based company that began in the 1990s. The founders moved year-round to a small island and taught themselves how to craft hand-woven wool blankets. The blankets now are shipped all over the world, and have a well-deserved reputation of fantastic quality, design, and warmth – well worth the price tag of $495 – $2000. The designs and color choices are simple and elegant. There are also choices of weight and wool.
In addition to blankets, they weave beautiful shawls, scarves, and baby blankets. They take custom orders, and will monogram. A blanket would make a wonderful wedding present! Every item comes with it’s own cotton storage bag. Because wool is a natural product, storing anything in plastic is not a good idea because it can’t “breathe”.
We must mention their organic hand-dyed merino yarn, spun in Maine. The yarn comes in gorgeous colors.
If at all possible, try to visit the Swans Island Blankets store and studio in Northport, Maine and watch them weave. It takes 9 hours to weave a queen-size blanket.
