Avoiding meat products takes a little effort and there are many apps ready to help you.  The following are apps that help you with recipes, checking ingredients in grocery products and translating vegetarian requests into foreign languages.


VegScan is a free iPhone app that will be your friend in the grocery store.  This app uses your iPhone camera to read the bar codes on products and tells you if they are vegetarian or vegan.

VegOut – Vegetarian Restaurant Guide uses your location and searches for vegan and vegetarian restaurants near you.  It is powered by HappyCow.net and works internationally.  It is for the iPhone and is $2.99.

I’m Hungry: Vegetarian Recipes provides vegetarian recipes from ten different cuisines.  It is for Androids.

HappyCow VeginOut Guide will help you find vegan or vegetarian restaurants in more than 90 countries as well as those restaurants right near you.  It is for Androids and $2.49.

The How to Cook Everything Vegetarian app for the iPhone and iPad is from Mark Bittman’s popular cookbooks by the same name.  There are over 2,000 meatless recipes and recipe variations, shopping lists and built-in timers. $9.99.

The Whole Foods Market Recipes app is free and currently only for iPhones and iPads but is coming soon for Androids.  There are over 3,000 recipes, shopping lists, meal plans and lots of cooking tips.

Looking for a vegan or vegetarian meal in a foreign country?  The Veggie Passport app is a vegetarian translator. Choose a sentence from among many and this app will translate it into any of 33 languages.  $1.00.  For the iPhone.

The Spark Recipes Healthy Recipes app is free and for the iPhone and iPad and Android.  Browse and search through 190,000 recipes.  Search by category, prep time or ingredient.  Each recipe provides nutritional information including calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs and more.
