She Built NYC is a campaign to bring more female statues to NYC. Women’s contributions have been overlooked for centuries. Currently, of 150 public historical statues, only 5 are women. A new Department of Cultural Affairs initiative will undertake the task of remedying the imbalance. Last year they asked for nominations for women to honor and received a diverse list of 326 eligible nominations (out of over 2,000 submitted). The first monument to be built will honor Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress representing part of Brooklyn. Four others have been selected to be built in 2021 and 2022. They are jazz singer Billie Holiday, public health pioneer Helen Rodriguez, civil rights leader Elizabeth Jennings Graham and Katherine Walker who saved dozens of sailors as the keeper of the Robbins Reef Lighthouse. A monument honoring Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony will be unveiled in 2020 and will be the first statue depicting historical figures who are women.

These three Spotify playlists are my current favorites for relaxing, back ground music – and we all can use a little more relaxation.

This is Iron and Wine is a collection of mellow vocal and acoustic guitar songs. I find it peaceful, ‘Sunday morning’ music.

This is Van Morrison leads off with ‘Days Like This’. Perfect for when your day begins to quiet down.

James Taylor Radio by Hez Claron takes me back to time of idealism, bell bottoms and acoustic guitars with Neil Young, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, Norah Jones.
