I find candy shops exciting, visually pleasing and, of course, delicious. Here are a few new candy start-ups and a couple of older favorites we’ve come across and have purchased from to wow our holiday guests with new sweet experiences.
Sugarfina sells high quality candy from around the world. Their packaging is lovely and their sweets are yummy. No junky candy here, only the best ingredients. We love the dark chocolate mint chip malt balls, the sea salt caramels and the licorice scotty dogs.
Safe Harbor Confections is owned and run by Martha, a former lawyer-turned-chocolatier. She donates a percentage of her profits to animal welfare organizations. Her company is solar-assisted in all their hot water usage. This is a very compelling company, and you haven’t even tasted the chocolates yet! Sublime is the word that leaps to mind. The filled chocolates are my primary passion, and words fail me. They are beautiful and delicious! The caramel and Maine sea salt, espresso, peanut butter and maple all vie for my absolute favorite! These are delicious!
EH Chocolatier uses no preservatives or artificial flavors in any of their chocolates. The chocolates are handmade in small batches. Based in Massachusetts, they have only been open two years. They make everything from chocolate bars and bark to filled chocolates to hot chocolate. The chocolates are beautifully decorated.
Fran’s Chocolates have been a favorite of mine for years, and you might be familiar with their gold foil wrapped bars. They make the most delicious coconut and almond bar, and caramel with almonds or caramel with macadamia nuts bars.
These are yummy caramel rolls from Suss Sweets in New Hampshire. The rolls are wrapped in parchment paper. Choose from these seven varieties: gingerbread, pumpkin, cappuccino, pecan, sea salt, vanilla, cinnamon apple and pumpkin with sea salt. They come in ¼ lb. rolls – ready to slice.
Veruca Chocolates are made by hand in Chicago by a former pediatrician who decided to transform her chocolate-making hobby into her career. There are nine flavors to choose from and each one sounds better than the next. Try Burnt Caramel and Dark Chocolate, Sea Salt Caramel, Mint & Lime, just to name a few. They are beautifully decorated.
My middle daughter is a chip off the old block. She recently moved to a completely new city for a job and she made certain to locate the nearest candy store to her apartment! It turned out to be a wonderful candy store called (oddly enough) The Candy Store located in San Francisco. It is a beautiful store and they carry confections from around the world as well as candy from our youth that you haven’t seen in years!!
