Chemical free tableware makes you happy, great design makes kids smile
Setting a happy, practical table for children makes mealtime nicer for everyone. Surprisingly, not all children’s dinnerware is made to the highest standard of chemical free, food-safe standards. My advice is that the more you can avoid harmful chemicals in tableware the better.
There is a website, Healthy Child Healthy World, offered by an environmental working group which rates children’s products. The healthiest products do not contain the harmful chemicals like phthalates, PVC, BPA, lead or other harmful toxins. According to the Healthy Child Healthy World website, if you are unsure about safely using plastic items, look for the recycling codes 2, 4 or 5. Plastics with recycling codes 1, 3, and 6 can leach lead, bisphenol and phthalates. If you are skeptical about using recycled products, remember that recycling saves energy, water, resources, landfill space and reduces pollution.
Here are some children’s plates and placemats that scrupulous experts recommend – and my grandchildren approve.
