Don’t be the one in five who develop skin cancer by age 70.
Over 5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. One out of every five people will develop skin cancer by age 70. It is the most common cancer and it is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. 90% of all aging is caused by sun exposure. With the changes in the ozone layers, we are more and more exposed to the sun’s rays so all skin tones and types need daily protection from sunscreens.
Consumer Reports has warned that some sunscreen companies’ products do not live up to their promises. Their researchers recently tested 73 sun protection products for the 2018 summer season. Descriptive language on sunscreen labels like “Sport”, “Natural” or “Mineral” or “Dermatologist Tested” have no useful meanings. Manufacturers are required to back up just three claims – the SPF, Broad Spectrum which means it protects against both cancer-causing UVA and UVB rays and Water Resistant. The researchers found that of the 73 products tested, 24 provided less than half of the labeled SPF protection.
Because sun damage is cumulative, we need to protect ourselves from the sun every day, not just when we go to the beach.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours.
- Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you go outside.
- Use 1 ounce (it should fill your palm) to cover your body.
Consumer Reports’ top three picks were LaRoche-Posay Anthelios 60, Equate Sport 50 SPF and Trader Joe’s 50 SPF spray.
I have used LaRoche-Posay Anthelios at the recommendation of my dermatologist for years. Five ounces of 60 SPF is $35.99.
Equate Sport Lotion SPF 50 is $12.40 for eight ounces.
If you have a Trader Joe’s near you, that is the easiest way to find Trader Joe’s Nourish Spray Sunscreen SPF 50. If you do not, Amazon will happily send it to you. A nine ounce can of the spray is $11.99.
Here are some other sunscreen products that have good recommendations:
Bullfrog Land Sport Quik Gel SPF 50 is fast-absorbing and enriched with antioxidants. Five ounces for $12.29.
Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50 is water resistant for 80 minutes. Eight ounces for $9.45.
For a good daily moisturizing with SPF 50 try LynFit Advanced Daily Moisturizing Sun Protection SPF 50+ Waterproof. It is light enough to wear under moisturizer and makeup. $24.95.
Even if my skin is going to be covered I use a body lotion with SPF 15. I like Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15. A twelve ounce bottle is $12.97.
