Keeping up with ‘pet tech’ for Fido and Freckles
I confess that I have spent quite a bit of money over the years on the latest fabulous toys and gadgets for our dog and cat. I adore kitty videos, love dog toys, and usually fall for anything marketed as a pet safety item. I never tire of pet stories and wish some of the pet apps on the market now were around when I needed them. I hope you enjoy some of the following finds.
Wag is a dog walking and dog-sitting app. It provides on-demand access to experienced dog walkers and dog sitters in your community who are available for hire, 7 days a week. Wag only shows you walkers near you (and your dog), and who are available when you need them (6 AM – 11 PM). You can book a specific date and time in advance or call for a walker as soon as possible. You can even follow the walk in real time on a map.
Whistle is a location and activity tracker for monitoring your dog or cat. It slides onto your pet’s collar and tracks them. It sends alerts to the app on your phone. The tracker is $80.00.
Check out our earlier article about the Dog Vacay – an Airbnb-type boarding app for dogs when you go away. Your dog will be lodged in a house rather than a kennel, and you will be able to check out the lodging and the inn-keepers before you make a decision.
Can I Pet your Dog? is a podcast every Tuesday hosted by Allegra Ringo and Renee Colvert, both dog-obsessed. They wax eloquent about the dogs they’ve encountered in the past week- on the street, in restaurants and shops and in the park. They interview guests (writers, artists, comedians) about their dogs. They have a Mutt Minute where the guest is asked to educate the audience on a specific dog breed. Another segment is called ‘hero dog.’ They go on assignment and report back. Download the app for free from iTunes.
Oh Behave! is a podcast about dog and cat behavior, hosted by animal behavior consultant and pet first-aid instructor Arden Moore. The goal of the podcast is to help humans and animals live happily together. She has top animal behavior experts as guests to explain things like how to stop your cat from scratching your sofa and your dog from getting spooked by the vet.

The Meowster Podcast airs on the 1st and 15th of every month. Each episode, co-hosted by cat expert Rebecca Zisch and cat appreciator Tim Black, explores cat antics, cat videos and highly amusing cat topics from pop culture and current events.

The Purrrcast is hosted by Sara Iyer and Steven Ray Morris and airs every Wednesday. They interview cat people, and explore the ups and downs of living with kitties. It is based in Los Angeles and they claim they talk to feline fans because they can’t talk to the felines themselves.

ThunderShirt Classic Dog Anxiety Jacket has been around for a while, and it has a good reputation. By applying gentle constant pressure it aims to calm a dog’s anxiety and fear. Many dogs are afraid of fireworks, thunder, travel, vet visits and more. This jacket claims an 80% success rate in helping to calm dogs. It comes in seven sizes and is $28.95.
Neo-Pop Canine Cat Scratcher is absolutely hilarious and equally pricey. It is shaped like a bull terrier and made from manila rope in the style of 1990’s neo-pop art. I just love it, but it is $395.
