Pantone color of the year

The global design world is in a blue mood – or maybe pink and green.

“When 80% of human experience is filtered through the eyes,
we understand that the choice of color is critical.”

Pantone claims to be the ‘global authority on color’. It is a company which has been evolving since the 1950s.

Its primary products are thin cardboard sheets (6” X 2”) with vivid colors printed on them.  Sheets of related colors with different tints are bound into color ‘fans’.  Graphic and interior designers and printers use Pantone Color Guides to define and match colors. Each of the 1,114 Pantone colors is assigned a number.  With these standardized colors, graphics can be reproduced by different processes and reliably yield the same result.

For instance, there is an ‘official’ Pantone color for the red, white and blue of the American Flag.

In 2007, Pantone was acquired by X-Rite, a supplier of color management tools, so now the company can measure, describe and define colors in existing products and graphics.  The combined company includes The Pantone Color Institute.  The Pantone experts study the effect of color on mood and attitude.  They can explain why ‘Minion Yellow’ catches your eye and ‘Tiffany Blue’ warms your heart.

The Pantone Color of the Year was first chosen in 2000 and today it not only influences fashion designers but the beauty industry, florists, home furnishings companies and other consumer-related industries as well.  A team of 20+ experts at the Pantone Color Institute seek a color which defines, reflects and inspires what they see in global culture.  They take nine months to make their choice.  The Pantone Color of the year, in turn, inspires the designer world.  Chicken and egg.

Sherwin William's Naval Blue 2020

Sherwin Williams 2020 color of the year is a bold navy called Naval Blue, SW 6244.

From Sherwin Williams

“The use of color in interior design is changing. It’s not just about what a space looks like anymore, but how it makes you feel,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “People want to feel grounded and inspired to pursue their mental, physical and emotional well-being. Naval is reminiscent of the night sky, which people have looked to for centuries for guidance, as a muse and as a reminder to live more mindfully.”
